Normally, learners of the English language get confused about what to call this punctuation sign "." in English. It happens because this punctuation sign can be called three different names: period, point, or dot. These names depend on the characteristic of what you are saying. Let's see the difference among these names:
Period: this is used in literature and general writing
E.g. "Mary is nice.", you say: May is nice (period)
Point: this is used in mathematics to describe decimals
E.g. "5.99", you say: five (point) ninety-nine, or five (point) nine nine
Dot: this is used for computers terms, or art pattern
