A pronoun is a word that takes the place or refers to a noun in a sentence.
- Subject Pronouns: It is a personal pronoun that is used as the subject of the sentence.
E.g. She introduced herself.
- Object Pronouns: It is a personal pronoun that is used as the object of the sentence.
E.g. You hit him.
- Possessive Adjectives: It is used as an adjective and shows ownership.
E.g. This is my pencil.
- Possessive Pronouns: It is used when there is no object after.
E.g. This pencil is mine.
- Reflexive Pronouns: It is used when the object and subject are the same person or thing.
E.g. She introduced herself.
- Relative Pronouns: It can be used to join a phrase to a noun or pronoun.
E.g. The pencil that I bought yesterday is good.
- Demonstrative Pronouns: It is used to point to specific things. "This" and "these" are used to point to things that are near in distance or time. “That" and "those" are used to point to things that are far in distance or time.
E.g. This pencil is mine. (the pencil is near me, for example, in my hand) / That pencil is mine. (the pencil is far from me, for example, on a table in front of me)
- Reciprocal Pronouns: It is used to identify an action or feeling that is done between two individuals or groups.
E.g. Mary and John like each other.
- Interrogative Pronouns: Used in questions.
E.g. Which pencil is yours?
- Indefinite Pronouns: a pronoun that does not refer to any person, amount, or thing in particular.
