Pronouncing "ed" Endings

All verbs in the regular simple past and past participle tenses and some adjectives end on “-ed”. The pronunciation of these words will depend on the end sound of the letter before the “-ed”.

There are three ways to pronounce the final sound of “-ed”:

/d/ pronunciation
1) When the word ends with “-ed” after voiced consonants, vowel, or diphthongs, you silence the letter “e” and pronounce just the letter “d”.

/t/ pronunciation
When the word ends with “-ed” after voiceless consonants, you pronounce the letter “t” instead of “ed”

/id/ pronunciation
When the word ends with “-ed” after the letters “d” or “t”, the “ed” add a syllable to the verb; then, you pronounce “id”

You are thinking, “Thanks God, there is no exception,” right? Sorry my friend, but there is an exception. These adjectives ended in “-ed” are pronounced with “id” sound independent of the sound before the “-ed”:
  • aged
  • dogged
  • ragged
  • blessed
  • learned
  • wicked
  • crooked
  • naked
  • wretched
Practice this rules are really important because mispronunciation lead to miscommunication.

This video will help you with this pronunciation.
